Nun’s Private Cemetery

St Dominic’s Road

The former cemetery is a small walled enclosure and is closely associated with the former Dominican Priory (Site 8). It was used a cemetery by the Dominican Order from 1902 to 1961. The grave of the founder of the order in Western Australia, Reverend Mother Gill, was located in this cemetery. In September 1996 the headstones were removed due to vandalism and the deceased were reinterred in Karrakatta Cemetery. A beautiful memorial wall of salvaged headstones was built by volunteers and can be viewed in the Dongara Cemetery. The plinth at this site previously supported a statue of St Dominic and resided in the garden of St Dominic’s Priory. When the priory and school closed the statue was returned to the Dominican Order and Perth and the plinth was moved to this site to serve as a memorial structure.
