This large house built in 1870 was once the home of prominent merchant Francis Pearse. It was originally a seven roomed house (later extended by three room) that had terraced gardens down to the river’s edge. Pearse arrived in Dongara in 1867 to open and manage a store at Port Denison in partnership with Edward Newman but on Newman’s death Pearse bought out the other partners. He was the local agent for Adelaide Steamship Co and went on to be a businessman, farmer and grazier in the area for over 30 years. On the block to the east, Pearse had a general store which burnt down in 1903. Pearse House was designed in the Victorian Georgian style and has considerable historic value as an early residence built for an early settler and prominent identity in the district.
